DAY 2 SHANGHAI
Arrive in Shanghai, private transfer to hotel. Balance of the day free at leisure. Orientation walk. Overnight at Holiday Inn Shanghai Vista or similar
DAY 3 SHANGHAI
After breakfast, experience the old world charm of the Bund, the former “Wall Street” of the foreign powers. Continue to futurist Pudong New Territory. Transformed from once fertile farmland, this new area is rapidly becoming the symbol of modern China with its clusters of shinning metal and glass skyscrapers of world class hotels, international financial institutions, and commercial centers towered above the Huangpu River. Later from the lofty platform of Jinmao Tower, you enjoy a stunning view of Shanghai. Wander the classical Yuyuan Garden, surrounded by the bustling bazaar. Then stroll along the ancient lanes of Tianzifang, now home to some of the city’s most popular boutiques and studios. MEALS: B L
DAY 4 SHANGHAI
This morning we travel to Zhujiajiao, which is a water town on the outskirts of Shanghai, and was established about 1,700 years ago. 36 stone bridges and many ancient buildings still line the riverbanks of this ancient town today. By traveling to Zhujiajiao you can not only enjoy the authentic experience at traditional southern China water villages, but also save a lot of time spending on the busy traffic. Return to Shanghai with the rest afternoon free to explore the city at own pace. MEALS: B L
DAY 5 SHANGHAI-XI’AN BY AIR
Board the Maglev, the world’s fastest magnetic levitation train, to Shanghai Pudong airport for your included flight to Xi’an, the ancient capital of China for 13 dynasties. En route to your hotel, stop at Hanyang Mausoleum, one of the best preserved royal tombs and the biggest Han dynasty tomb in China. This evening, you attend a feast of culinary and cultural delights with a special Dumpling Banquet followed by a fascinating Tang Dynasty Stage Show. DAY 6 XI’AN
Today’s sightseeing begins with the magnificent Terra Cotta Warriors & Horses Museum, China’s greatest archaeological discovery! At the excavation site, you’ll have ample time to marvel at this vast army, thousands strong, which was buried 2,000 years ago to guard the tomb of an emperor. DAY 7 XI’AN-LHASA BY AIR
Fly to Lhasa, storied capital of the Tibet autonomous region in China, 12,000 feet above sea level on the northern slopes of the Himalayas. Arrive at your hotel with time to rest and adjust to the high elevation. En route to hotel, receiving briefing with your Tibetan expert guide to hear about the local customs, traditions and the thrilling journey you will experience in Tibet. DAY 8 LHASA
Morning join Tibetans as they perform Kora, an ancient rite of prayer, at Medicine King Mountain. Spend some time with a Tibetan family in their home and tour Nobulinka, the former Summer Palace of Dalai Lama. It is the largest and grandest garden of the Tibet Plateau. The highlight of your trip to Sera Monastery this afternoon is a debating session held between the monks, that attracts pilgrims and visitors alike. Return to hotel for overnight. MEALS: B L
DAY 9 LHASA
Arrive this morning at the popular Barkhor Street Bazaar, located in the heart of Lhasa. This cultural highlight is comprised of a series of circular streets that encompass the Jokhang Temple, along with many merchants and vendors offering a wide variety of local Tibetan arts, crafts, and tasty cuisines. At the Jokhang Temple, the traditions of Tibetan Buddhism can be observed by the sound of chanting sutras and the spinning of prayer wheels. Local Tibetans can be seen day and night performing pilgrimages and prostrations around the Bazaar. Spend some time at the nearby Ani Tsankhung Nunnery. In the afternoon, continue your visit to the astonishing Potala Palace — one of the grandest monuments in all of Asia. Built in the 17th century atop the original 7th century site, the palace boasts more than 1000 rooms, including the Red Palace (where the Dalai Lama once lived) and10,000 chapels. MEALS: B L
DAY 10 LHASA-CHENGDU BY AIR
Fly to Chengdu. Arrival transfer to your hotel in this capital city of Sichuan Province. At the famed Sichuan “face changing” opera, we’ll take you backstage for an interesting look as these skilled actors apply their intricate make-up. Tonight, try the famous China “Hot Pot” for dinner. DAY 11 CHENGDU-BEIJING BY AIR
This morning you’ll get to visit some of Chengdu’s most relaxed local celebrities – giant panda bears. We’ll travel to the Chengdu Panda Breeding & Research Center, which houses around 80 giant pandas. The center is one of the largest panda breeding facilities in the world. DAY 12 BEIJING
Spend the day discovering the city’s Imperial sites at a leisurely pace with your guide and driver. Stand in Tiananmen Square, one of the grandest public plazas in the world, and explore the palaces, courtyards, and pavilions of the Forbidden City, once the exclusive domain of China’s Emperors. Tour the lovely Summer Palace, once the summer retreat and playground for the imperial family and royal court during the late Qing Dynasty. Considered the finest Chinese imperial garden, the Summer Palace spans over 700 acres with breathtaking views, temples and pavilions. MEALS: B L
DAY 13 BEIJING
Morning enjoy a rickshaw ride along Old Beijing’s Hutongs (narrow ancient alleys) to discover the sights and sounds of local Beijing life in these traditional Chinese neighborhoods. After lunch break, complete the day with an exciting excursion to the Great Wall of China at Mutianyu section. Mutianyu Section is a bit more remote from the capital, but with smaller crowds, this lesser-visited section of the Great Wall promises a more authentic and rewarding experience. MEALS: B L
